Beneath the city of Pula lies a fascinating underground world – Zero Strasse (Zero Street) is a system of underground tunnels built by the Italians during World War II to protect civilians and military units from bombing. Today, it is one of Pula’s most unusual and interesting tourist attractions.

The tunnel was built between 1942 and 1944 and originally measured over 400 meters. Corridors wind through the rocky core of the city hill; during the war, they were equipped with beds, sanitary facilities, and even a hospital. The shelter had a capacity of up to 3,000 people.

Today, part of the tunnels is open to the public. Guided tours take you through the cool (17°C) and history-steeped interior, where original elements from wartime are visible—carved inscriptions, older doors, and wall structures. The atmosphere is unique and unforgettable.

The entrance to Zero Strasse is near the Arch of the Sergii in Pula’s old town center—an ideal starting point for a full day of exploring the city. The combination of ancient Roman monuments, Venetian fortresses, and this underground attraction makes Pula one of the most diverse destinations in Istria.
Practical tips: Bring a light sweater; it’s cold in the tunnels year-round. Advance booking of guided tours is recommended, especially during the summer season.
