Profile Description

After morning coffee in Buzet, we head to the parking lot right next to the bridge over the Mirna River. Equipped with food, drinks, and a camera, we set off along the Mirna River toward the gorge.
We soon reach the starting point, where the trail leads us upstream along the river. A narrow path takes us through the forest alongside the river, which we cross several times. The river has carved out numerous small pools, rapids, and waterfalls beneath large, at times even intimidating, rocks. This is also an area where coal was mined in small quantities in the past, but entry into the mine tunnels is prohibited.

This brings us to the first waterfall, where we take our first break. Below the waterfall is a small lake where it would be refreshing to take a dip in the summer heat.
After the break, we’ll climb a fairly steep path, secured by a rope, to the next waterfall.

Although the river looks rather bleak at the start of the trail, we can already enjoy the beauty of nature here. The next waterfall is larger than the previous one and plunges into an emerald-green pool. Opposite it is a climbing wall where climbers find their spot. From here, we head back a short distance. We return along the same path to the junction, where hiking markers lead us up the hill to the top of the gorge. The path becomes increasingly steep—but it is well-secured!

The path leads us to the next waterfall, where there is a slightly larger lake, though it is not very big either. Hidden in the gorge, it gives the impression that the sun never shines here.
Amidst all this beauty, we also cross a true masterpiece—Napoleon’s Bridge.
We are still below the village of Selca on a poorly marked trail. We follow the river and, after occasionally guessing whether to go left or right, we reach the abandoned village of Glistonija and then Ščaveti. The next landmark is the village of Kotle. From here, we continue right downhill along the Mirna River. We descend along a narrow path and continue right at the intersection. The trail leads through the shade, sometimes on flat ground, sometimes uphill along the river, which is on our left. If your legs are aching, a dip in the pool will do you good.

We cross the Mirna three times. The trail leads us to the village of Pengari, where we can continue along the longer route through the town or take the narrower, shorter path to the right on the outskirts. We head back toward Buzet.

We’ve walked 16 km. The trail is poorly marked in some places but is well worth the trip. The hike along the beautiful river, full of pools, rapids, waterfalls, and footbridges, will delight you.
