Nature Trail to the Source of the Hubelj River

Profile Description

The nature trail to the Hubelj spring, starting at the Pale Sports Park in Ajdovščina, takes us on a 3,100-meter journey through the mysterious world of nature right on the town’s doorstep.

The Hubelj is one of the main, cleanest, and most potable karst springs in the Vipava Valley. The water, which collects deep within the mountain, emerges from rock crevices at an elevation of 219 to 249 meters above sea level. During droughts, the spring is insignificant—only 180 l/sec; but when heavy rains fall over the Trnovski Forest, enough water accumulates in the karst underground to gush out of this large hole at a rate of up to 65 m³/sec. The view of these waterfalls of foaming water, thundering over the cliff into the riverbed as water droplets spray down to the bridge 40 meters below, is magnificent.

The clear, cold water at the foot of the steep mountain attracted the attention of the Romans, who built an important outpost with lodging, warehouses, and stables along the Fluvio Frigido (Cold River); later, the military fortress of Castra was erected near Hubelj.

The nature trail to this fascinating spring at 3,100 meters takes you through the mysterious world of nature. Along the 24 stations on the trail, you’ll learn about typical tree species, shrubs, rocks, the aquatic ecosystem, forest animals, and other points of interest.
