Rogatec Open-Air Museum is an interesting trip idea. This page includes a short description, location, photos and basic visit information.

The original idea to preserve the birthplace of poet Jože Šmit has, over the years, evolved into the largest local open-air museum in Slovenia, which was nominated for the European Museum of the Year Award in 1997. It is a scientifically designed cultural monument of national importance under the professional supervision of the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage – Celje Branch. The museum offers guided tours and runs an engaging educational program featuring active ethnological workshops for youth and adults, museum demonstrations, and hands-on workshops on traditional crafts, farm work, and cultural heritage:

  • bread baking,
  • wicker and willow weaving,
  • hand weaving,
  • blacksmithing,
  • stone masonry,
  • cooking and peeling willow twigs,
  • Easter bouquets and baskets made of dough,
  • Christmas wreaths,
