Hidden on Monte Madonna hill near Pula lies a little-known yet exceptionally fascinating historical site—a system of well-preserved military fortifications and bunkers from World War II. The place is a true paradise for history buffs, photographers, and adventurers who love to discover Istria’s hidden corners.
Whether viewed from a drone or on a hike, an impressive scene unfolds: concrete structures, underground tunnels, and openings of former defensive positions are hidden among lush Mediterranean vegetation. The fortifications are situated at a strategic point overlooking Pula Bay and the surrounding settlements.
Most of the structures are freely accessible, making for an interesting exploration. The bunkers are overgrown with vegetation, creating a photogenic blend of nature and history. Early morning or late afternoon are the ideal times to visit—the light is beautiful, and there are few tourists.
The site is not an official tourist attraction, which means you’ll likely have it almost to yourself. The path to the fortifications is marked but accessible only on foot or by bike—motor vehicles cannot reach the summit. We recommend sturdy footwear and a sufficient supply of water.
Tip: Combine your visit with a trip to nearby Cape Kamenjak or Pula for a perfect day on the Istrian coast.
