The Plešivec Mill and the Horse Chestnut Avenue is an interesting trip idea. This page includes a short description, location, photos and basic visit information.

The Plešivec Mill is a distinctive day-trip stop above the Kaštel Gorge in the Municipality of Slovenj Gradec. At the start of an idyllic small valley, you’ll find a restored water mill, and next to it a horse chestnut avenue at 860 metres above sea level, described by the municipality as a unique feature in Slovenia.

A mill with a long story

According to the official municipal description, the first owner of the Plešivški mill was Count Plešivčnik about 500 years ago. The mill served the count and nearby farmers who brought their own grain, and it remained in use until 1958. After restoration work on the lake and walls, water drove the mill again on 30 August 2008. Today it is a small but meaningful heritage point that combines history, landscape, and local identity.

What to expect on the route

The official tourist route notes wetlands near the mill, plus rare animals and plants along the way. Continuing on, you reach Plešivški dvorec, now only a trace of foundations, and then the Verneršek farm (Vernarica), where views open toward Mount Uršlja gora and the wider Koroška region. For more determined hikers, the route can continue to the Church of St. Ursula.

How to plan your visit

This is best suited to visitors who enjoy light hiking, heritage, and quiet forest scenery. The municipality also states that guided visits can be arranged through the Slovenj Gradec Tourist Information Office or through the Cultural Association Ksaver Meško Sele-Vrhe, which is the official caretaker of the route.
