Profile Description

The Ormož Lagoons – A Paradise for Nature and Bird Lovers

The Ormož Lagoons are one of the most important and beautiful nature conservation areas in northeastern Slovenia. They lie along the Drava River near the town of Ormož and were created through the renaturation of former gravel pits—abandoned gravel pits that were left to nature after excavation. Today, this area is a valuable wetland that is home to an exceptionally rich variety of flora and fauna.

The Ormož Lagoons are particularly renowned for their abundance of birdlife. More than 250 different bird species have been recorded here, making it one of the most important ornithological observation sites in Slovenia. Among the most frequently observed are various species of ducks, geese, swans, herons, and bitterns, as well as many rare species during seasonal migrations.

Trail and Observation Points

A walking trail with several observation points runs along the lagoons, allowing you to observe birds and nature in peace without disturbing the animals. The trail is suitable for all ages and does not require any special physical fitness. We recommend binoculars and quiet behavior.

Best time to visit

The lagoons are attractive year-round, but early spring and fall are particularly spectacular, as birds stop here during their seasonal migrations. In spring, you can observe nesting; in summer, young birds; and in fall, flocks of migratory birds.

Practical information

Admission to the area is free. Parking is available along the road. Suitable for children and seniors. We recommend visiting in the morning when the birds are most active. Bring binoculars and walk quietly.
