Russian Chapel is an interesting trip idea. This page includes a short description, location, photos and basic visit information.

The Russian Chapel below the Vršič Pass is one of the most recognizable heritage stops in the Julian Alps. Today it is best understood as a place of remembrance rather than a conventional museum: a wooden Orthodox chapel linked to the construction of the Vršič road and the fate of wartime prisoners.

What it is

According to the official Triglav National Park description, the chapel was built in January 1916 for the Orthodox spiritual care of war prisoners working on the road over Vršič Pass. A widely repeated belief that it was built in memory of an avalanche tragedy is incorrect; the chapel predates the March 1916 avalanche. Next to it stands a tomb with a pyramid-shaped monument and the inscription “To the sons of Russia.”

Why go

The visit is short, but memorable. It works well as a stop while driving over the pass, or as part of a day trip from Kranjska Gora, Trenta, or the Soča Valley. Because it is an outdoor heritage site, it is suitable for a self-guided visit and photos, but it should be approached respectfully and quietly.

Things to check before you go

The Vršič area is subject to traffic and parking rules that can change. Before traveling, check the official Kranjska Gora municipality pages for access, barriers, parking, and any seasonal restrictions. Triglav National Park also advises visitors to check current conditions before arrival and reminds them that they are responsible for their own safety.

If you want to extend the outing, combine the chapel with other Vršič stops. For any special events, interior access, or seasonal changes, always verify on the official site first.
