Jurklošter – Ruins of a Cistercian Monastery

The ruins of a Cistercian monastery dating from 1140 in the Savinja Valley—one of the most important church complexes in Slovenia.

Profile Description

Jurklošter – Ruins of a 12th-century Cistercian monastery

In the peaceful Savinja Valley, surrounded by forests and rivers, lies the village of Jurklošter with its impressive ruins of a former Cistercian monastery. The monastery was founded in 1140 and was one of the most important ecclesiastical complexes in Slovenia during the Middle Ages. Today, preserved sections of the Gothic abbey church, cloisters, and building foundations bear witness to its former grandeur.

The Cistercians were known for their scholarship, agriculture, and architecture. At the Jurklošter Monastery, they maintained extensive fishponds, vineyards, and fields. The monastery was repeatedly plundered and damaged during Turkish raids until it was finally abandoned in the 18th century. Today, the ruins are protected by the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage.

Cycling Route Along the Savinja

Jurklošter has become a popular stop on the cycling route along the Savinja River. The Savinja Cycling Route passes by the ruins and offers a pleasant one-day cycling experience from Celje or Mozirje. The route is mostly flat and suitable for all ages.

Surroundings and Nature

A peaceful valley with forests and meadows stretches around the monastery. A stream runs right next to the ruins, perfect for cooling off your feet during the summer months. The village has a small restaurant serving local cuisine. The area is excellent for photography, walks, and cultural tourism.

Practical Information

The ruins are accessible free of charge year-round. Parking is available near the village. We recommend combining your visit with a bike ride along the Savinja River or a visit to nearby Rimske Toplice. For organized tours, contact the Jurklošter Tourist Association.
