Lake Sestrsko

Profile Description

Lake Sestrško – a training ground for bird and plant observation.

The Medvedce Reservoir in the Drava Plain was built in the 1970s to regulate high water levels in the Polskava River. The flooding created a shallow body of water, the western and southern sides of which are densely overgrown with stands of cattail, reed, and other marsh and riparian vegetation. During this period, numerous waterbirds began nesting here, including many endangered species. The Medvedce Reservoir is becoming increasingly important as a stopover site for migratory birds, as up to 7,000 individuals of various waterbird species occasionally gather here.
