Profile Description

Radensko Polje Landscape Park – Mysterious Intermittent Lakes

The Radensko Polje Landscape Park near Grosuplje is home to a unique and rare natural phenomenon in Europe—karst intermittent lakes. These are lakes that appear and disappear depending on the amount of rainfall. After heavy rains, the entire field fills with water, forming lakes that then literally disappear underground through karst sinkholes during dry periods. This wonderful play of nature attracts visitors from all over Slovenia.

The park covers approximately 640 hectares and is protected as a landscape park. In addition to the intermittent lakes, the Radensko Polje is home to numerous protected plant and animal species. In summer, the meadows bloom with wildflowers, while frogs, waterfowl, and other rare animal species inhabit the wet areas.

Trails and Activities

An approximately 8-kilometer-long nature trail runs through the park, leading past its most significant points—by the intermittent lakes, along karst caves, and through preserved meadows. The trail is suitable for hikers and cyclists. Information boards explaining karst phenomena are placed at the viewpoints.

Best time to visit

The intermittent lakes are most often visible in late fall and early spring, when rainfall is at its peak. A summer visit is also pleasant—the meadows are green, and the trails are clear and easily accessible. We especially recommend an autumn visit following heavy rains.

Practical information

Admission to the park is free. A parking lot is available along the road near Grosuplje. The park is an excellent destination for families with children, school trips, and nature lovers. We recommend that cyclists use bicycles with flat tires.
