Vogar – a viewpoint overlooking Lake Bohinj

Vogar is one of the most beautiful and most frequently photographed viewpoints in Slovenia. It lies at an elevation of 1,054 meters above sea level, on the slope of Mount Vogar, just above Lake Bohinj. The view that unfolds before you is breathtaking: below you lies the blue-green Lake Bohinj, while in the background rises the majestic Triglav and the entire range of the Julian Alps.

Vogar is not just a viewpoint—it is a working farm with a long tradition of alpine grazing. In the summer, cows graze on the mountain pastures, providing milk for excellent cheeses and cottage cheese. During your visit, you can sample local dairy products, which are a specialty of this region.

How to get to Vogar?

There are two routes leading to Vogar:

• On foot from Stara Fužina – the marked trail takes about 2 hours of walking through forests and hayfields. The trail is suitable for recreational hikers.
• By the Vogel Gondola – from the lower station at Ukanc, take the gondola up to the upper station, and then it’s about a 20-minute walk to Vogar.

Best time to visit

The view is magical all year round. In spring, the surroundings are covered with blooming meadows; in summer, they are green and vibrant; and in fall, they turn golden-red with autumn foliage. A visit in the early morning is a special experience, when the fog slowly rises from the lake’s surface and reveals a panorama that will stay with you forever. In winter, when Vogel is covered in snow, a visit feels like a winter fairy tale.

Practical Information

Access to the mountain pasture is free. The Vogel cable car requires a ticket. There is a mountain hut on the pasture offering refreshments and snacks. We recommend trekking shoes or at least suitable hiking boots.
