By bike to the headwaters of the Ljubljanica River and through the mysterious Ljubljana Marshes

In the lowland part of the municipality of Vrhnika, there are numerous trails perfect for cycling while taking in the natural beauty. We suggest you choose the source of Slovenia’s most celebrated river, the Ljubljanica, as your destination. The circular cycling route, which begins and ends in front of the Vrhnika Tourist Information Center (TIC), will take you to Močilnik, where the Argonauts once sailed their ship and where Jason left the imprint of his fist in the “Devil’s Rocks.” Continue toward Retovje, where numerous springs converge to form the Great Ljubljanica, then head through Verd to Bistra Castle and its beautiful springs. On your way back to Vrhnika, ride past Cankar’s “eleventh school” under the bridge and see where Slovenia’s greatest writer and playwright splashed in the Ljubljanica River as a child. This easy cycling route is 12 km long. Directions: TIC Vrhnika, follow the sidewalk along the main road to Ivan Cankar Elementary School, turn left, then take the 4th street to the right; after crossing the Ljubljanica River, turn right again off the main road toward Močilnik. To reach the spring at Retovje, return to this point and continue along the main road to Mirka, followed by Retovje, Verd, and Bistra (toward Borovnica). On the return trip, in Verd, head toward Vrhnika and do not go through Retovje again. From here, you can continue through the mysterious Ljubljana Marshes. The circular cycling route through the Ljubljana Marshes, which starts and ends in front of the Vrhnika Tourist Information Center (TIC), is 27 km long. Along the way, you can visit the monument to Ivan Cankar, the Church of St. James in Blatna Brezovica (one of the stops on the St. James Pilgrimage Route), the Mali plac Nature Reserve, and Jurčevo šotišče, a natural monument of national importance. You can also add the 6-km Bevke Educational Trail to the route. The circular route will take you 2.5 hours, and the educational trail an additional hour. Part of the route is on a gravel road. Directions: From the Vrhnika Tourist Information Center (TIC), head toward Sinja Gorica (toward Ljubljana), cross the bridge over the highway, and turn left immediately. The gravel road begins shortly after, and you’ll ride alongside the highway until the next bridge, where you’ll turn right. When you’re almost at Bevke, take a sharp left toward Mali plac (a small forest). At the paved road, turn right into Bevke, followed by Blatna Brezovica, Sinja Gorica, and Vrhnika.
