Profile Description

The locals simply call it Špica, and it’s part of the daily routine for many residents of Kamnik, as it offers a relatively short climb that can be adapted to any individual’s pace. The first hikers set out in the summer before 6 a.m., and we won’t even mention evening visits. The trail is also excellent for runners, as the intensity of the climb varies. The ground is compact and perfect for running, with no slippery rocks. The trailhead is right behind the Health Center, where we take a narrow paved path at the base of the hill and can turn left into the forest at the first or second opportunity. Certain shorter sections of the trail toward Špica have changed slightly, as many trees were knocked down or later cut down in the two years following a natural disaster. In the middle section, we come across the “land of windmills,” which is a real feast for the eyes. The trail to this beautiful spot is also suitable for younger children. We can use the Seven Dwarfs and Snow White as an incentive to invite the little ones into the forest for some exercise and spontaneous play. The trail continues to the main paved road, which leads left toward Stari Grad. 13921014_1709975859266239_4155913770996951221_n photo:Jugo Justin‎ It’s important to cross the road and climb up quickly. Soon, the clear view reveals a spot where you’ll be captivated by the phenomenal panorama of the entire Kamnik area. On the right, you can clearly see Stari Grad, which you can also visit on foot. There is no accessible water at the top, so we recommend bringing your own. The descent can be slightly confusing for visitors who have never walked the trail before, as narrow paths stretch down the entire slope. If you’re in the mood for a leisurely stroll, you can admire the extraordinary beauty of the forest, which in spring is dotted with wood anemones and young fir trees. Those who are wary of getting lost can turn on their GPS and find their way down without much trouble. The ascent should take about 40 minutes of leisurely walking. The forest practically invites you to spend time there, as it is a true stress-buster. We don’t get enough exercise and rarely venture into the woods. We’ve forgotten how positively it affects the overall well-being and health of both adults and children. We only need to protect ourselves against minor nuisances with light-colored clothing, long sleeves, and insect repellent. There are plenty of ticks in the Kamnik area, but that should by no means be an excuse to skip a trip into nature. Author / cover photo: Špela Rojc
