Profile Description

The Kokoš Hut (670 m) stands on a hilltop on Jirmanec Hill, which overlooks the tourist destination of Lipica, the largest Slovenian village of Lokev, and Vilenica, the oldest tourist cave in Europe. The hut is named after the peak of Kokoš (674 m), which is a good 5 minutes’ walk from the hut. Near the hut and below the slope of Jirmanec, there are two boundary stones, remnants of the former feudal division of land in the Karst region. Just 30 minutes southeast of the hut lies the peak of Veliko Gradišče, which, at 741 m, is the highest peak of the Trieste–Komen Karst. On the southwestern slope, there once stood a hillfort that was destroyed in the 5th century. The hut is open every Friday afternoon, as well as on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. By prior arrangement, it is also open on other days. View: The Kokoš Hut is an excellent vantage point, as on clear days you can see Triglav and its neighboring peaks, the Dolomites, the Karst peaks (Nanos, Vremščica, Slavnik), and the coast with its hinterland and nearby towns (Koper, Izola, Piran, Trieste, Udine, and even Venice). A visit to the hut is a pleasant experience that can be combined with a tour of other attractions in the Sežana Karst, including Sežana, Lokva, Lipica, and, last but not least, the Škocjan Caves. Notable tours:

  • Lipica Stud Farm – 1 hr.
  • Vilenica Cave, past the stud farm – 2 hrs.
  • Škocjan Caves, past the stud farm and Vilenica Cave – 5 hours.
  • Lokev – 1 hr 45 min.
