Profile Description

Snežnik (1,796 m) – Slovenia’s highest non-Alpine peak

At 1,796 meters above sea level, Snežnik is the highest non-Alpine peak in Slovenia and one of the most isolated. What makes it unique is that it stands somewhat apart from the Alpine world, giving it a special character—the view from the summit is therefore unobstructed in all directions and particularly magnificent. On a clear day, you can see the Adriatic Sea, Kvarner, the entire Alps, and even the Dolomites from here.

Snežnik is part of the Snežnik Forest and Hunting Complex, one of the largest and oldest preserved forests in Europe. The forest is home to wild boars, red deer, roe deer, lynx, and even bears. A hike through this ancient beech forest is an experience in itself, not just a destination.

The Trail to the Summit

The most common starting point is the village of Loski Potok (Retje). From there, a marked trail leads through a dense beech forest, past the Sviščaki Mountain Hut, and up to the summit. The entire ascent takes about 3 hours, and the descent takes 2 hours. The total length of the trail is about 14 km. The trail is moderately challenging and suitable for anyone in good physical condition.

Mountain Hut

Along the route is the Sviščaki Mountain Hut (1,243 m), where you can spend the night and have a meal. The hut is open seasonally (spring through fall). We recommend making a reservation in advance for overnight stays.

Practical Information

Entry to the forest and the summit is free. We recommend hiking boots and appropriate gear. In winter, the summit is snow-covered and requires winter gear. During the summer months, the trail is well-marked. There is a stationary mountain logbook at the summit.
